The Red Shoes is a story by Hans Christian Andersen. A chilling tale of vanity and fate. A young girl, overwhelmed by her pride in her looks and dancing shoes meets her destiny at the end of the executioner’s axe.
When pairing music with this tale, I found a waltz in E minor seemed to fit. I wanted to capture a feeling of being trapped in a creepy funhouse of death, stalked by menacing clowns. An unusual intro, Betiden tells you that this is indeed happening, though you may not understand where you may be headed or why.
The Red Shoes begins with a soft squeal of guitar swelling to a thunderous crash. A slow crescendo building to a freak out of tremolo picking and crashing cymbals with a timbre reminiscent of ‘Monkey Shines’.
You know, the usual fairy tale stuff.
