about

This song is a dedication to James “Jimmy” Greene. It was written in his brother’s living room a short while after a tragic canoeing accident took Jimmy from this world, just a few days shy of his 23rd birthday.

Corey Woodcock and Matt Edwards were both personal friends of Jimmy’s, so they were recruited to be on this heartfelt effort. Corey’s pedal steel adds a layer of masterfully expressive emotion to this tribute already laced with weeping vocals and a trembling harmonica. We threw reverb all over the place, added a B3 with a light ballad drawbar setting and muted the kick pedal on the bass drum to help soften the mix.

The lyrics read almost as a conversation between a parent and child. I was thinking about what it’s like looking at all that innocence and just wanting to protect it. What kinds of things do you feel looking back on the past from the present when it comes to someone you’ve lost? If you could go back and offer advice, what would you say?

What would they say back?

According to Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation; when you fall, technically, the ground does come up to meet you. In this case, the expression is a metaphor for the situation.

The ground in this song was our family after the loss. We came together more tightly than ever. We grounded and supported each other through the tragedy. This is an expression of that sad but powerfully unyielding love.

True love.

James Robert Greene
July 18, 1986 – July 14, 2009

He was smiling…That’s right. You know, that, that Luke smile of his. He had it on his face right to the very end. Hell, if they didn’t know it ‘fore, they could tell right then that they weren’t a-gonna beat him. That old Luke smile. Oh, Luke. He was some boy. Cool Hand Luke. Hell, he’s a natural-born world-shaker.

lyrics

We’re at the start now, that’s where we begin
Before I’m broken down again
And everything looks innocent to me

Well I don’t have time before I die
To let you make me change my mind
I’ve got one life, I know, the choices mine to make

You know, most times you’ve got to crawl before you walk
And there’ll be times when they put you up just to watch you fall

Did you ever wonder if there’s cameras up above when you give away your love?

I know, sometimes it seems you’ll fall
And then when you do
The ground comes up to meet you
Sometimes it seems as if the sun is crying down on you
But you can still feel it shining down
I said sometimes it seems as if you’ll fall
And then when you do
The ground comes up to meet you
Yeah
